Product Description

Protecto Tape is a self adhering, conformable, modified bitumen tape. Protecto Tape has a fabric top that provides a base to which most plaster or texture coat finishing systems are able to be applied, creating a monolithic finish. Protecto Tape can be used as a waterproofing membrane under conventional metal or timber parapet caps and also as a flashing for behind cladding junctions. Protecto Tape when used in conjunction with Protecto Wrap Detail Tape can be used to form saddle flashings or any awkward flashing requirement. Protecto Tape is 1.0mm thick and available in 75mm, 150mm, 300mm, 400mm wide by 30m long rolls. Features & Benefits Adaptable to fit most flashing requirements. Zero waste as tapes can be overlapped. Scope of use

Protecto Tape flashing tape has been appraised for use as a waterproofing membrane tape within the following scope: ¬ on buildings within the scope of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1, with regards to building height and floor plan area; and, ¬ on parapets and balustrades, which have a minimum slope of 10° (1 in 4); and, ¬ with proprietary EIFS and texture coated fibre cement cladding systems; and, ¬ over fibre cement, polystyrene or timber substrates; and, ¬ as a sealing ‘bandage’ over fixing blocks in external walls.

New Zealand Building Code (NZBC)

The product will, if employed in accordance with the supplier's installation and maintenance requirements, assist with meeting the following provisions of the building code:

• Clause B2 Durability: Performance B2.3.1(b)

  Performance B2.3.1 (b) 15 years. Protecto Tape flashing tape meets this requirement. See Paragraphs 8.1 and 8.2.

• Clause E2 External moisture: Performance E2.3.2

  Performance E2.3.2. Protecto Tape flashing tape contributes to meeting this requirement. See Paragraphs 7.1-7.4 and 11.1.

• Clause F2 Hazardous building materials: Performance F2.3.1

  Performance F2.3.1. Protecto Tape flashing tape meets this requirement.

 Protecto Tape flashing tape as a product is not within the scope of the NZBC, however it is used in conjunction with building elements and proprietary cladding systems that are required to meet the NZBC. Therefore, in the opinion of BRANZ, Protecto Tape flashing tape, if used, designed, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of this Appraisal, will meet or contribute to meeting the following provisions of the NZBC:

Product Criteria

Design requirements

Protecto Tape flashing tape is suitable for use with most plaster or texture coat finishing systems. Confirmation of the suitability of using Protecto Tape flashing tape with a given plaster or finishing system must be obtained from the cladding manufacturer, proprietary plaster or coating finishing manufacturer, or from Marshall Innovations Limited. Note, sealant must not come into contact with Protecto Tape.

Installation requirements

All design and building work must be carried out in accordance with the Protecto Tape flashing tape Technical Literature and this Appraisal by competent and experienced tradespersons conversant with the Protecto Tape flashing tape. Where the work involves Restricted Building Work (RBW), this must be completed by, or under the supervision of, a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) with the relevant Licence Class. 

Maintenance requirements

No maintenance is required for the Protecto Tape flashing tape, however regular checks must be made of the plaster or texture coat finish on parapets, balustrades and around fixing blocks to ensure it is sound and will not allow moisture penetration. The finishing system must be recoated as required by the manufacturer of the system which typically is every 5-10 years.
